Songkran literally means astrological phase in the sense that it is celebrated in Thailand as New Year’s Day. Celebrations run from 13 to 15 April. This festival coincides with several others in South and Southeast Asia noting that most calendars in this region also have their New Year celebrations in the same period as Thailand.
What makes this event notable is the throwing of water. This symbolizes washing away all the bad things from the previous year as people prepare for blessings which are due for the coming year. In addition to throwing of water the celebration will be accompanied by fragrant herbs to keep traditions alive.
Other activities people indulge in during the two Showbox Download days of celebration include visiting elders. Most people in Chiang Mai, Thailand will be seen going back to their hometowns so that they may reunite with their elders. Although Songkran is celebrated in other regions of the Asian continent, it is seen as a culture of Thailand. This claim of heritage was the reason for controversy when Singapore hosted a large two day Songkran-style water festival which was promoted as the largest water festival party in Singapore. However, Singapore’s government made some changes in its event to make it different from the one held in Thailand.
